Free to download, Paint 3D, Microsoft's regenerated Paint software is a 3D sketcher application which enables you to develop objects from scratch or personalize pre-made models by changing colors or adding text and objects. You can go on to create a scene by adding more shapes and models, turn a 2D picture into a 3D scene, or turn your competed model into a revolving animation.

Once installed, Paint 3D opens to a Welcome screen with options 'New', 'Open' and 'Paste' at left and tutorials at right. Moving on to the graphic user interface, you'll find your canvas at left, the toolbar at the top of the screen and the relevant tool options and functions in the panel at right. The default at start is the brush tool with nib, color and other selections displayed in the right-hand panel. There's a help icon in the upper left-hand corner. In addition to brushes, the toolbar includes 3D objects, 2D stickers, text and effects as well as 'Undo' and 'Redo' buttons. The canvas itself can be rotated or hidden.

The basics for creating a 3D model

  • Click the 3D objects icon in the toolbar and select a pre-made model from the right-hand panel.
  • This opens on the canvas with rotation handles and a positioning handle in place for you to begin personalizing it.
  • Click the brush tool icon and select your nib, color and effect options.
  • Use the rotation handles to enable painting the model from all angles.
  • Click the text icon to access fonts and styles, stickers and effects for shapes, patterns and textures.

As you become more confident with using the program, you can really get creative and use layers to add depth or turn individual drawings into 3D images with the doodle tool. Use the 'Magic Select' tool to create cut-outs from existing photographs or other image files. You simply drag the select tool over the area you want to use, then add and remove areas using the magic select button. Once you are satisfied, click the green check mark and your cut-out will be displayed as a new layer on the canvas. It can also be saved as a sticker. Once a project is finished, you can use the lighting filters in the effects tool to set a mood for your work of art. Then go to the bottom of the screen and click the 'View in 3D' button to view it in its entirety.

Saving and sharing

You can name and save your project, or share it. Windows Share or the new Remix 3D online service is accessible from Paint 3D. As a member of the Remix 3D community, you can upload your creations and download others from the Remix 3D catalog. Additionally, you can even use the 'History' export button on the toolbar to create and share a video of the complete process of creating your model.

Paint 3D runs under Windows 10 32 or 64 bit. It is a large file and very memory intensive, in fact, resource-hungry in general. Ideally, should be used with a touchscreen and digital pen for optimal performance.
